The Volunteer Outreach Coordinator is responsible for the management of volunteers and community service workers with a focus on recruiting, training, coordinating and retaining an adequate number of volunteers to professionally operate the Lenawee Humane Society. Also responsible for implementing educational programs that will reach a variety of audiences and age groups, focusing on responsible pet care and the humane treatment of animals. Additionally, the Volunteer Outreach Coordinator may be responsible for leading or assisting in fundraising/outreach efforts.
Responsibilities
1. Recruit, interview, train and schedule volunteers, volunteer trainers and community service workers.
2. Work with the Shelter Manager to solve problems, determine the number of volunteers needed and facilitate volunteer evaluation, support and supervision.
3. Develop volunteer positions, volunteer recognition programs and periodic program evaluations.
4. Manage shelter volunteers and oversee all care and husbandry of shelter animals performed by volunteers. Set standards for and monitor conduct of shelter volunteers to ensure that humane philosophy is projected to public and implemented in care of animals.
5. Responsible for training all new volunteers, including but not limited to: cleaning and maintaining all areas of the shelter to acceptable standards, handling of donated goods, engaging Volunteers and Community Service workers with staff and public, and navigation and use of the Volgistics Volunteer Data Management System.
6. Ensure all Shelter Volunteers are performing their job responsibilities to acceptability standards determined by management.
7. Oversee Volunteers, Community Service workers, and other potential shelter help, including organized groups.
8. Oversee scheduling of public group tours and ensure guided and informative tours are given of the shelter.
9. Maintain Volunteer database and volunteer communications.
10. Implement long-term strategies to increase volunteering, improve volunteer knowledge, and provide additional training to increase volunteer opportunities.
11. Maintain phone, e-mail, and any other correspondence with the public for various questions regarding volunteering or outreach efforts.
12. Develop and maintain annual outreach budget and plan.
13. Implement educational workshops and programs for audiences of all ages.
14. Coordinate and conduct animal safety presentations at educational facilities throughout Lenawee County.
15. Implement long-term strategies to develop and improve outreach strategies with the public both on and off-site.
16. Coordinate and oversee Outreach Committee, including monthly meetings in order to develop new outreach strategies and coordinate programs and events.
17. Coordinate, attend and assist with outreach events and activities as needed on- and off-site, (i.e. Puppies on the Porch).
18. Exhibit positive working attitude by demonstrating respect for fellow workers, donors and customers.
19. Organize and maintain Pet Food Bank program for senior citizens through Adrian Senior Center.
20. Coordinate, set up, and manage birthday party events.
21. Plan, schedule and supervise summer day camps for children.
22. Develop and coordinate Pet Therapy visits to senior care centers and hospitals

24. Must attend regular training, provided by LHS, to continually improve volunteer efforts.
25. All other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- 1-4 years of prior volunteer management, education or related experience.
- 1-5 years Computer software experience.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills including sentences and paragraph construction, proper grammar and spelling, concise and professional writing and public speaking.
- Must be able to work effectively with people from different backgrounds and respect diversity.
- Must have a positive attitude, offer strong self-motivation, and demonstrate a willingness to commit to the values of Lenawee Humane Society.
- Must participate effectively on teams and offer ideas to enhance the organization.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, stand, squat, bend and climb on a daily basis.

- Must possess tact and patience necessary to work with the public.
- Ability to attend trainings and educational seminars (whether local or out of town).
- Ability to express and implement rules in regards to humane education regulations.

Understanding and experience with volunteer based organizations. Will accept candidate with equivalent training and years of experience. Humane Education experience in an animal-related field preferred.

Working Conditions
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Position is physically demanding at times. May possibly be asked to help lift, move, or carry animals or objects weighing up to 50 pounds on an emergency basis, or up to 120 pounds with assistance from other staff members.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Consistent with an animal shelter environment.
SENSORY DEMANDS
Ability to withstand constant phone ringing. Ability to withstand excessive barking at times. Ability to work consistently with loud children. May come in contact with strong odors, including chemicals used for disinfecting.
MENTAL DEMANDS
Animal welfare, especially paired with children and pet owners in need of assistance, can be emotional and rewarding at the same time.
