Baby Girl, a beautiful american bulldog, first arrived at Lenawee Humane Society in August 2015 after the death of her owner. When she arrived, we had no idea that Baby Girl's heavy panting would turn into a life-threatening situation within a couple of days, but with the help of donors, supporters, and the amazing staff at Blue Pearl Animal Hospital, Baby Girl received emergency surgery that ultimately saved her life. Baby Girl was diagnosed with Brachycephalic Syndome, a condition prone to bulldogs and other breeds with short muzzles. Read more about that story here.
Once cleared for adoption, Baby Girl soon found a family who loved her unconditionally. They showered her with love and spoiled her, making her life complete once again.
In February 2017, however, Baby Girl was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer. Her family sent us this heartbreaking message:
"It is with an extremely heavy heart I thought I'd let you all know Baby Girl was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer today. It took over her entire liver. Right now she's at home being spoiled rotten eating what she can of all her favorite foods. I want you all to know how grateful we are for you allowing us this great honor of her being in our lives. "
The next day, her family had to make the selfless, yet difficult decision to ease Baby Girl from her suffering.
"On 2-12-17 I had to make the difficult decision to put her down. It just hit her so fast and so hard.. I actually ended up taking her to the ER clinic to have it done.. Hardest choice I've had to make. We just know she's up there running and snorting, being free and probably with her previous owner that past. I just keep reminding myself that she was so loved by so many and for 1yr. 1 month and 3 days we had her she brought so much joy, laughter and healing to this family. She was so loved!!!! I believe she was sent to us for a reason!! It sound strange but as much heartache as it was this is what we're suppose to do is give all the love and a home to another like her no matter what time they have left so they don't have to spend it in a kennel. I have faith we'll find the right one. It'll be the look in the eye's just like it was with her. For some weird feeling it'll be another female bully with the scrunched up smiling face. Thank you all SO much for all the love and goofy times we were allowed to have!!!"
Although we are devastated to hear that Baby Girl's life was cut short, we are so happy to know how amazing her time spent with her adopters was. Every moment mattered and every life she touched was changed for the better. We send this tribute to Baby Girl and to the family who loved her more than we imagined possible.
Fly high, sweet girl. You definitely earned your wings.
