The Animal Shelter world is an amazing one because shelters and rescue groups all have the same goal: saving lives. Without competition between organizations, we have found that making friends is easy and networking is necessary to grow and save as many animals as possible.
Branch County Animal Control (BCAC), responsible for strays in both Branch and Hillsdale Counties, works hand-in-hand with Branch County Humane Society (BCHS), a no-kill shelter that works tediously to pull animals from BCAC once their time is up in order to find them forever homes. Because of this wonderful working relationship, the euthanasia rate at BCAC has dropped drastically and more lives are being saved than ever before.
On Wednesday, we had the pleasure of meeting the hard working people at both BCAC and BCHS when we pulled a young mastiff mix from their Animal Control facility and brought her back to Lenawee County to be placed up for adoption. Not only is a kennel now free in Branch County for another stray animal who needs them, but because this dog's stray hold was spent in Branch County, she was then able to be spayed and immediately placed up for adoption here at Lenawee Humane Society.
So, why would we help out another county when there are strays right here in our own county, you ask? Because of YOU! With your help networking, volunteering, fostering, and adopting, most strays are reunited with their owners and dogs surrendered to the shelter are being adopted quickly. This wonderful turnover rate means we've had extra space for dogs lately! If an empty kennel can be used to save one more life, it is important that we do so. In order to be true to our own mission of "saving the lives of animals while enriching the lives of humans," it is important to save animals in danger of being euthanized, no matter where they are from.
The young mastiff mix, who we named Demi, was adopted two short days after arriving at Lenawee Humane Society!
