At LHS we love to share positive stories but sometimes there are those so heart-wrenching it causes even our seasoned veterans to become emotional, one example being this horrific sight our staff arrived to the morning of April 2nd, 2014.
Abandoned, alone, and freezing was a puppy inside a filthy dog crate. Although there was a feces-covered dog dish inside the crate, the puppy obviously had not experienced a real meal in months. He was sleeping in his own filth with no escape available to him. Our staff was shocked but immediately pulled him out and got to work cleaning him up, getting him warm and feeding him. We named this sweet, innocent boy Survivor ("Suri" for short) because our staff and volunteers are dedicated to the care, love and commitment it takes to bring babies like him back to health.
By April 8th, 2014, only a week later, Suri's weight had shot up from a measly 25 pounds to a more comfortable 33 pounds. His skeleton no longer showed through his glistening coat and a spark had been ignited within him. Because of his past, we expected Suri to be wary of humanity. Why trust what almost destroyed you? Suri refused to believe the worst in people though. Everyday he showed our staff and volunteers how thankful he was for his rescue. His outlook on life and the trust he bestowed upon his saviors taught us an important lesson: Life can only destroy you if you let it, but hope allows you to survive anything.
On April 23rd, 2014, Suri's life changed one more time. A family had followed his story and they were immediately captivated by this young pup's resilience and determination to live. When they arrived at the shelter to meet him, it was love at first sight. Our staff and volunteers were in tears as they caught glimpses of how amazing Suri's future will be. Suri was in doggy heaven and could not believe his luck. We know it wasn't luck that saved this pup though.. it was fate that brought him to our door step that day.
