If you feel as if you can no longer keep your pet, please consider every available option before giving them up.

Behavior issues?
Consider contacting an animal behaviorist, trainer, or check out ASPCA’s Virtual Pet Behaviorist.

Financial issues? We have a Pet Food Bank to help keep pets at home, where they belong.

Moving? Many apartments and houses are pet-friendly!

Found a cat outside? It most likely is just exploring and will find its way back home.

The reasons to give up are endless, but so are the solutions! If you feel as if you’ve explored every solution, however, we are here to help. Please understand that we are not an open-admission facility and do not euthanize to make room for new animals. As a no-kill facility, our residents mean the world to us and remain with us until they get adopted, even if this process takes weeks or months.

Therefore, animals are accepted by appointment only.

Intake Process

• Complete a surrender request.

• Once your request is reviewed, if we have space and your pet is an ideal candidate for adoption, we will contact you with more information.

Due to the high volume of surrender requests we receive every day, please understand that we are not able to take every call, return every call and process every animal.

If you need to rehome your pet immediately, Adopt-a-Pet’s FREE Rehoming Service may be able to help: https://rehome.adoptapet.com

• Your pet will be assessed during the appointment to determine if he/she qualifies as an adoption candidate.

• If your pet does not pass our assessment behaviorally or medically, you will be provided with other options.

• We do not preform owner-requested euthanasias.

Stray Animals

If you have found a stray dog, please contact Lenawee County Animal Control at 517-263-0524 or submit a Found Pet Report.

• Strays are boarded at Lenawee Humane Society or Addison Vet Clinic for 4 business days while the animal is publicly advertised and an owner is located.

• If an owner is not located, the animal is spayed/neutered and placed up for adoption.

• Stray dogs are considered county property until an owner is located and therefore you MUST contact Animal Control to report them.

• Feral and unsocialized outdoor cats are unadoptable through our program but can be trapped, spayed/neutered, and returned back to the wild where they are comfortable living.

Owner Surrenders

• We accept dogs and cats only.

• No small animals, livestock, or wildlife.

• We accept all breeds, senior pets and special needs pets.

• If your pet displays major aggression, anxiety or untreatable health issues during the intake exam, we may not be able to accept the animal into our adoption program.
