Reggie, a ten year old shepherd mix, came to the Lenawee Humane Society already fixed and up to date on vaccinations. However, he had a suspicious mass on his leg and what appeared to be some mouth issues. Our veterinarian scheduled him for surgery and a dental for Wednesday, May 3, 2017. However during BISSELL’s Empty the Shelters event on April 29, 2017, a family fell head over heels in love with Reggie and the feeling was mutual. We decided there was no reason to keep Reggie here, so if the new adopter could agree to bring him back for the procedure, he could be adopted. They were both elated as they left the shelter together.
Reggie’s weekend at home was amazing. He and his family spent the entire weekend together, bonding and enjoying every moment. It may have very well been the best weekend of Reggie’s life, as this ten year old, slow-moving pooch’s tail never stopped wagging. He knew he was finally home, finally loved, and he was so, very happy.
On May 3, Reggie’s new dad brought him in for his routine appointment. He promised Reggie that he’d be back soon, hugged him multiple times, and reminded him how much he loved him.
Several minutes into Reggie’s routine appointment it was clear that his issues were far more serious than simply needing a dental. As he was being anesthetized, Dr. Sumner was having trouble sliding the tube down his throat. She quickly investigated the problem and discovered a large mass in his throat. Reggie was suffering from a progressive type of cancer that was sure to be his demise. Dr Sumner called Reggie’s family to explain the situation and provide options. The future for Reggie was grim. Together with his new family, we decided it was better to allow Reggie to go peacefully than to wake him up and allow him to suffer until his end.
Reggie had found his forever home, but no one could have predicted how short forever would be.. However, in Reggie’s eyes, his life was complete that weekend. He finally had a family of his own, a home of his own, and he experienced unconditional love like never before. He did not die an abandoned shelter dog, and for that we are forever grateful.
To Reggie’s family, thank you for your selfless and compassionate act. Thank you for sacrificing your heart for a dog who needed it more.
