With his shiny black coat, happy smile and outgoing personality, you’d never know ten-year old Zeke was hiding a secret. A simple blood test quickly revealed what a physical exam couldn’t – his heart had been overtaken by heartworms, a deadly parasite transmitted through the bite of just one tiny mosquito. Without treatment, this disease eventually leads to heart failure and death.
Although Zeke’s heartworm test came back positive, he’s still optimistic. He’s already watched you save Ivan, another senior pooch who tested positive for the same disease.
Ivan’s life was in danger too, but because of your support, he received the life-saving treatment he desperately needed. With your help, Ivan landed his forever home as soon as you saved his life. He’s thankful every single day because you gave him a future he only dreamed of before, and his new adopter is grateful for being blessed with a dog who has changed their life for the better.
Heartworm disease is already hitting our tiny shelter hard this year. Along with Zeke, two more dogs are currently in jeopardy of losing their lives to this awful disease. Royalty and Mateo, both found as strays in different areas of Lenawee County, dream of a day when they can run in a backyard at full speed before curling up on the couch with their new families.
To prevent heartworm disease from claiming even more lives, all dogs at Lenawee Humane Society are given monthly heartworm preventative during their stay. This monthly dose only costs about as much as a fast food value meal, while the cost of treating the active disease costs hundreds of dollars and can take several months to complete. Your donation today not only provides life-saving treatment for those already infected, it also prevents this parasite from claiming victims in the first place.
With your help, we know there is still hope for Zeke, Royalty, and Mateo to have a chance to live long, healthy lives with loving families, just like Ivan. Can you please help us save them too?
