Piper was a tough cookie. She didn't like other dogs, she chased cats and she was scared of small kids. To make matters worse, she hated being in her kennel at the shelter and would act out, quickly making potential adopters turn away.
Outside of her kennel, however, Piper was a model citizen. She loved going for car rides, dressing up to go shopping, and covering her best friends in slobbery kisses. We did our best to spotlight her true personality via videos uploaded to our website and social media. We crossed our fingers and hoped for the best during BISSELL's Empty the Shelters event on April 29. Was this going to be Piper's big day?
25 dogs passed by Piper as they headed home with their new families. Somehow, she was the only dog not picked to begin her new life that day. We knew there had to be a reason why.
Piper's story drew a lot of attention, but most adopters' hands were tied because of Piper's restrictions. Finally, the morning of May 3, a woman called asking for more information about Piper. We learned that she and her husband were retired "empty nesters." No children, no pets, and no kennel to contend with. We just needed to see if Piper thought they were as perfect as they sounded.
Piper's meet and greet that afternoon went better than we could have hoped. She knew this was finally her family! She danced around them, wagging her tail and sneaking in kisses whenever she could. When we asked what attracted them to Piper, her new mom told us, "she had a sweet face, I just knew she had to come home with me." View the video that made them fall for her here.
We realized she didn't want to share her adoption day with 25 other dogs.. Piper was a star and needed her own big day, all to herself!
