When a call came in from Lenawee County Animal Control asking for help with a hoarding situation involving over twenty cats, Lenawee Humane Society staff members jumped into action and got ready for a long night. It didn’t take long to realize that this situation was even bigger than we thought. 20 cats quickly became 31, signed over by a family who clearly loved them but could no longer handle the sheer number of cats that had continued to multiply in their home.
“Kitten Season” has hit our community hard this year, filling our shelter with more cats & kittens than ever before and making this task nearly impossible. To help create space, dedicated staff members each took several cats home to live temporarily until others get adopted here at the shelter. Still, most of the new cats have to be housed together with 2-3 of their friends.
All 31 cats are currently being medically evaluated by our Hope Clinic team and will be available for adoption soon. Many have upper respiratory infections, internal parasites and fleas, but otherwise appear to be in decent health. It shouldn’t take long until they’re available for adoption, but in the meantime we desperately need your help to make their stay as pleasant and as short as possible.
Monetary donations are desperately needed to help with spaying/neutering and medical costs. We’re also running low on supplies needed to care for them, including cat litter, dry cat food, canned cat food, bleach and laundry detergent. Can you please help us help them? We can’t thank you enough for your incredible, life-saving support for homeless pets who get second chances every single day because of you!
