It’s heart-wrenching when a Lenawee Humane Society employee arrives at work to the sight of an abandoned crate placed near our door, especially during Michigan’s extreme weather. This was the case on November 4, 2014. To make matters worse, the note attached to the thin plastic stated, “Hi, I’m George and I need special food.”
We had no idea what this cryptic message meant. Allergies, hairballs? We quickly brought George inside, out of the bitter cold, and worked diligently to find a place for him to sleep. We searched for some non-ordinary food to feed him until we could investigate his situation with a veterinarian’s help.
George’s first two days at LHS were difficult because we didn’t know what was so “special” about him. We couldn’t wait for his veterinarian appointment so we could get to the bottom of this mystery. After George’s exam, bloodwork was taken and we couldn’t believe our ears when we heard the results.
George was diabetic. Without insulin, a special diet, plenty of water and monitored bloodwork, George could die.
We couldn’t believe how lucky this cat had been. Although George was abandoned on our doorstep, we’re happy that his family trusted us enough to save his life. We quickly made a plane, which included insulin twice a day, a bloodwork check every two weeks, and a home.
However, finding a home, even a temporary one, seemed impossible. Injecting insulin into an adult cat intimidated most people. George stayed with employees on weekends, but finally found his place as a permanent fixture in the upstairs offices of Lenawee Humane Society.
George now spends his days as an office assistant, a circus clown, and a body scarf. He loves attending meetings and traveling the world, helping spread the word about special needs animals like himself.
To help George and other special needs animals, please donate to our Special Needs Fund. Allow George to travel the world with you and lend a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. Every life matters.
