Dear Friends,
It is because of you that our biggest challenge to date was accomplished with much success. As you all know, we assisted the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Department in shutting down a puppy mill, rescuing more than 265 animals between December 29, 2018 and January 4, 2018. On January 29, 2018 we won the forfeiture hearing allowing us to begin the adoption process of the more than 100 animals in our care. From you sharing our story on Facebook, to your donations of cleaning supplies, to your donation of time, to your short note of gratitude, to your financial contributions, every single one of you were a piece of this enormous, heart wrenching puzzle! EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU were part of the successful adoption of 90 animals finding their true forever home within only 6 weeks time! WE THANK EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU!
With every success, as with every failure, comes lessons learned. We learned many things throughout this process. We learned that this community truly cares about animals. We learned that we have a lot of support in our mission to Save the lives of animals while enriching the lives of people. We learned that although we do great things, we can do better! We realized there is still a lot of work to be done to save animals from abuse, neglect, overbreeding and homelessness.
Our lessons learned will be our vehicle for direction to a better future for Lenawee Humane Society, the animals we care for and the people who love and support them. This means change is necessary and there is more work to be done. Upcoming changes this year will include a more personalized customer service and improved adoption experience, for you, our shelter pets and our staff. There will also be a change in the way we label breeds with more of a focus on DNA testing and less on “guesstimating" based on physical characteristics. All too often guessing a dog's breed(s) can cause animals to wait longer than necessary for their forever home. We are up for the challenge and we hope you will support us in our efforts to be the best we can be and to do the best we know how for the animal.
2018 will be the year of changes, the year of action. While we can never please everyone while we put the needs of shelter pets first, we will certainly never stop trying. Click here to tell us what you think of our upcoming changes. If you have ideas how you think we can improve, tell us. We want to hear from you!
