From late December and throughout January, reports poured in about a stray pitbull mix wandering around the west side of Adrian, doing his best to survive on garbage and meals left outside for him by concerned citizens. Terrified, this dog evaded every single person who tried to capture him in order to get him to safety and out of the elements. Even attempts by our volunteers and staff members failed.
Finally, on February 2nd, Lenawee Humane Society staff member McKenzie Liedel arrived at the shelter with this gorgeous red dog in tow. He was alert, friendly, and in better shape than we expected. McKenzie told us she was driving in the area this dog had been frequenting when she spotted him out of the corner of her eye. She quickly pulled over and called to the dog. Like so many times before, he tucked his tail and ran from her. Persistent and calm, McKenzie grabbed her leftover chicken alfredo from inside her truck and threw a couple pieces to the dog. The dog slowly returned, gobbling up the pieces offered to him. Within no time at all, he was eating out of McKenzie's hand.. followed by jumping directly into her truck! Neighbors witnessing this miracle happen were excited and grateful. This scared, lost dog was finally finished with this part of his journey.
Our Communications Manager, who operates our Lost & Found network, had discovered who this dog's owner was a day before he finally arrived at our shelter. We knew his name was Bumblebee and we knew his family was extremely worried about him. Within minutes, we had contacted the owner and we patiently waited for their happy reunion.
As soon as the dog's human walked through the door, Bumblebee completely lit up. He was no longer the scared, nervous stray who wouldn't let anyone near him. He turned into a mess of puppy whimpers and hugs as he showered his dad with kisses. Everyone watching was just as emotional as Bumblebee.
Losing a pet is not difficult just for the humans involved, but it's extremely hard for the missing pet. Most dogs do not know how to survive on their own. It is truly a miracle that Bumblebee survived the cold winter months and was reunited with his family. Many animals are not as lucky.
Show your pet how much you love them by keeping identification on them at all times. Lenawee Humane Society offers personalized tags and microchips. In the event that your pet does go missing, we operate a very successful Lost & Found network. Please, help us prevent your pet from going through Bumblebee's ordeal. Your pet will thank you.
