What's worse than a broken heart? A broken heart full of heartworms.
It's one thing to be searching for your forever home, surrounded by strangers. It's another thing completely to be suffering from a fatal, yet preventative, disease while searching for your forever home. FOUR dogs are currently in this precarious position: Blue Bell, Boomer, Sasha, and Piper.
Each dog has a different story. However, each dog would have had the same ending had they not come to Lenawee Humane Society, where they will undergo a lengthy and expensive treatment in order for us to save their lives.
Heartworm is caused by a single mosquito bite. The infective larvae released into the dog's bloodstream grow and reproduce, sometimes growing into 12-inch long heartworms. These heartworms engulf the heart and bloodstreams, slowly killing the animal from the inside. Because this parasite resides inside, there are almost never any symptoms until it's too late.
Panicking yet? Although this disease is all TOO common now, it is highly preventable. Heartworm preventative can be given monthly and costs roughly the same as your average fast food meal. Blue Bell, Boomer, Sasha and Piper were not given this preventative. Now, each treatment will cost anywhere from $200-$600 depending on size and any other issues that may arise.
We will not let these dogs suffer and we will not let them die. However, we need YOUR help in order to save them. The number of special needs animals desperate for our help keeps increasing and as a result, our funds are quickly diminishing. Any amount you are able to donate will help save a life (or several!)
Meet the faces who will have a future because of you.
