Dear Friends,
2023 was a challenging year for the animal welfare world and LHS felt it. With rising costs, a veterinary shortage and limited resources, many people simply couldn’t care for their animals any longer, which meant we had our work cut out for us. Because access to care has been more difficult, adoptions are down and the number of animals being abandoned has increased, leaving shelters
overcrowded and animals struggling.
Although these challenges became more personal to Lenawee Humane Society when we lost our own vet, we knew that with change comes growth. It’s because of YOU we had the opportunity to learn, grow and do better.
We continued to think outside the box and implemented the Capacity for Care model. Using this strategy meant that we could not take in as many animals as in the past, but more importantly, it ensured that we could fully commit to the needs of each animal in our care.
Implementing this model has not only improved life for our shelter pets, but it has also helped prevent our staff from being overworked and stressed out, resulting in the best employee retention we’ve seen since Covid. Lastly, it has helped us provide even better customer service to all of our incredible supporters.
Although the number of animals we cared for in 2023 was significantly less than in years past, the impact was still monumental. Our high standards and complete commitment to every animal is made possible because of YOU.
We are lucky to have such an amazing, supportive community helping us save the lives of animals while enriching the lives of humans. Thank you for making an impact!
With much appreciation,
Marcie M. Cornell
