Dear Friends,

2023 was a challenging year for the animal welfare world and LHS felt it. With rising costs, a veterinary shortage and limited resources, many people simply couldn’t care for their animals any longer, which meant we had our work cut out for us. Because access to care has been more difficult, adoptions are down and the number of animals being abandoned has increased, leaving shelters
overcrowded and animals struggling.

Although these challenges became more personal to Lenawee Humane Society when we lost our own vet, we knew that with change comes growth. It’s because of YOU we had the opportunity to learn, grow and do better.

We continued to think outside the box and implemented the Capacity for Care model. Using this strategy meant that we could not take in as many animals as in the past, but more importantly, it ensured that we could fully commit to the needs of each animal in our care.

Implementing this model has not only improved life for our shelter pets, but it has also helped prevent our staff from being overworked and stressed out, resulting in the best employee retention we’ve seen since Covid. Lastly, it has helped us provide even better customer service to all of our incredible supporters.

Although the number of animals we cared for in 2023 was significantly less than in years past, the impact was still monumental. Our high standards and complete commitment to every animal is made possible because of YOU.

We are lucky to have such an amazing, supportive community helping us save the lives of animals while enriching the lives of humans. Thank you for making an impact!

With much appreciation,

Our life-saving services exist because YOU make it possible.
Here are just a few of the grateful pets you helped save in 2023:

Bubba Blue

1 year old
Found as a terrified, unsocialized stray. Spent months undergoing rehabilitation, training and socializing before finally being adopted on June 6, 2023.

Missy

10 years old
Brought to our shelter after sadly losing her owner, Missy found an unbelievably happy ending when we were contacted by her original family from 5 years prior. Reunited with her long lost family on April 5, 2023, who also adopted Missy’s new best friend, Mamma Mia.

Arayah Sunshine

5 years old
Found alone, scared and heartbroken in a motel room after her human passed away, Arayah received her second chance after being adopted by a loving family on April 26, 2023.

Cotton

2 years old
Rescued from a hoarding situation with several other cats. Took months of socializing, medical care, and even surgery to remove his eye before Cotton was finally ready for a family of his own. Adopted with his best friend, Auggie, on July 25, 2023.

Auggie

2 years old
Rescued from the same hoarding situation as Cotton. Served as his buddy’s emotional support animal for several months before they were finally adopted together on July 25, 2023.

Rhett

10 months old
Adopted from LHS as a young puppy, Rhett ended up in a shelter in Indiana before his first birthday. Transferred him back to us so we could spend time training and socializing him for his next home. Found his forever family on August 26, 2023.

Oliver

2 years old
Found trying to survive with an old, severe break in his leg. After recovering from amputation surgery, Oliver was adopted September 30, 2023 and is now thriving in his new home.

Sandy

1 year old
Almost lost her life after getting tangled in her collar while also trapped inside a car engine. After being rescued and a bit of TLC, Sandy was adopted October 5, 2023.

Will Feral

1 year old
Rescued from yet another hoarding case with over a dozen other cats, Will Feral never really knew human contact until he arrived at our shelter. Luckily, it didn’t take him long to realize how much he loves people. Adopted October 13, 2023.

Sylvie

4 years old
Found as a stray with chronic pneumonia and major stranger danger. It took over a year for Sylvie to overcome these challenges, but she was finally adopted on 11/29/23 by a family who loves her unconditionally.

Cloud

3 months old
Cruelly starved alongside her littermates, Cloud was too weak to stand when they finally arrived at our shelter. After several weeks in a foster home with consistent feedings and round-the-clock care, Cloud was adopted by a loving family on December 2, 2023.

Thank you for another year of overcoming challenges and saving lives together!
