Our community has needed us more than ever this past year, which means there’s been a major increase in challenging medical cases, unwanted litters and special needs pets.

Here are just a few of the incredibly special lives saved in 2022:

Buster

5 years old
Needed his eye removed and to be reminded that he has something to live for. Currently being fostered by a family who plans on making him a permanent addition.

Martha

10 years old
Found in terrible shape because she’s diabetic and had heartworm disease. Her diabetes is now under control, her body is free from heartworms and she was officially adopted by her foster mom on November 29, 2022.

Envigo Beagles

7 months-2 years old
Transferred to LHS with nine others after the Envigo Research Facility in Virginia was shut down. These 10 beagles were part of a group of 5,000 who were being bred for research purposes. Thanks to help from shelters and rescues all over the country, all 5,000 beagles are now safe. Our 10 were adopted soon after they arrived in August.

Zorah

3 months old
Required emergency surgery to remove her severely injured leg. Was so grateful she never stopped purring. Adopted November 18, 2022.

Rae

5 years old
Found as a stray with eyes damaged so badly she couldn’t see out of them. Needed to have them surgically removed. Got adopted almost immediately afterwards on December 8, 2022.

Daisy

3 years old
Found while extremely pregnant with 13 puppies. Sadly, major health issues meant only half of her puppies survived, made possible by the life-saving efforts of dedicated staff, fosters and donors. Thanks to this incredible village, all have been adopted, including Daisy.

Autumn

3 years old
Found completely emaciated. X-rays later revealed she also had a diaphragmatic hernia, which resulted in her organs dangerously pushing against her lungs. She’s currently recovering from surgery in a foster home.

Marsha

2 years old
Rescued from a puppy mill in Alabama with hundreds of other “doodles”. Came to LHS with eight others for a second chance and a desperately needed makeover, both physically and mentally. Adopted September 2, 2022.

Dorothy

8 years old
Found outside in rough shape and diagnosed with allergies so severe she was scheduled for entropion surgery. However, her daily allergy medication soothed more than her awful itchy skin. It also soothed her painfully swollen eyes, thus avoiding surgery! Adopted November 23, 2022.

Kira

2 years old
Found as a stray while pregnant and needed emergency c-section after she had been in labor for several days. Sadly, her single puppy did not survive, but Kira luckily recovered quickly. Adopted by her finders, who fell in love with her, on November 9, 2022.

Angelica

2 years old
Found outside in April with six newborn kittens. Watched all of them get adopted by loving families. Still patiently waiting for a home of her own.
